ESS & MAX IV THE EUROPEAN SPALLATION SOURCE (ESS) ESS is one of the largest science infrastructure projects being built in Europe today. Designed to generate neutron beams for science, ESS will benefit a broad range of research, from life science to engineering ma­terials, from heritage conservation to magnetism. MAX IV Laboratory is a national electron accelerator laboratory for synchrotron radiation research which was inaugurated on 21 June 2016, in the presence of the Swedish King, His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf and t he Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven. ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society was a Danish-Swedish-Norwegian project that aimed to seize opportunities brought by the region through the construction of two world class research facilities in Lund, Sweden: The European Spallation Source (ESS) and the MAX IV-laboratory, part of Lund university. MAX IV provides users with the most brilliant X-rays for research. National and international researchers from both industry and academia use the Swedish-based laboratory to conduct advanced experiments in materials and life sciences. The X-ray light is used for research at several experimental stations called beamlines.
